Viking Centre welcomes new investment and tenants as part of Jarrow’s regeneration
The transformation of the Viking Centre is a fantastic example of the Jarrow Forward plan in action—bringing together investment, partnership, and community ambition to create a brighter future for our town.
Investment continues to flow at the Viking Centre in Jarrow, as Sheet Anchor Evolve, part of M Core, focus on strengthening the offering for local residents and retailers.
Since acquiring the property in June 2023, the company has invested heavily in the centre to improve both its appearance and its offering for consumers. Works have included refurbishments across key retail units, high-level redecorations, signage upgrades and general placemaking enhancements to create brighter, more attractive spaces for businesses and visitors alike.
A number of new lettings have already been secured, with PureGym set to open in 2026, alongside Subway, Specsavers and Forces Support (veteran’s charity). Existing tenants, including Superdrug and Hays Travel, have also renewed their leases, reflecting the continued confidence in the centre and its role as the main shopping destination in the town.
Working closely with South Tyneside Council through the Jarrow Forward initiative, Sheet Anchor Evolve is supporting local employment and community activity within the town. The centre has also hosted cultural initiatives such as the National Gallery’s display of John Constable’s The Cornfield, transforming a vacant unit into a temporary gallery and giving local residents the chance to experience world-class art on their doorstep.
Adam Davies, Asset Manager, Sheet Anchor Evolve said:
“The Viking Centre is at the heart of Jarrow. We aim to make sure it continues to thrive for the people who live and work here, a place where the community can meet, shop locally and feel proud of what’s on their doorstep.”
“We’re investing for the long term, working with our tenants, the council and local partners to ensure the centre remains a welcoming and vibrant part of the town’s future.”
Cllr Margaret Meling, Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Transport at South Tyneside Council said:
“The transformation of the Viking Centre is a fantastic example of the Jarrow Forward plan in action—bringing together investment, partnership, and community ambition to create a brighter future for our town. By working closely with local businesses and residents, we’re not only improving our town centre but also delivering on our commitment to provide more opportunities for young people, support local jobs, and make Jarrow a place we can all be proud of. This is just the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Jarrow, and I look forward to seeing the positive impact these changes will have for years to come.”
Steve Elrington, Head of Acquisitions at PureGym said:
“There is huge appetite for affordable gyms in Tyne and Wear and we are delighted to be opening a brand-new club in Jarrow at the Viking Centre. PureGym Jarrow will provide members with 24/7 access to flexible, affordable fitness facilities to help them reach their fitness goals. The new gym is in a fantastic location and will help to drive footfall to the shopping centre as well as creating six jobs in the local area. We look forward to welcoming members through the doors of PureGym Jarrow next year.”
